So yesterday, and this week in general, was hell. I had to do all of my work for finals a week early (which is almost all done, except for one 8 page paper/project). Yesterday started off by me waking up early to grade exams for an hour and a half, then I went into school where I promptly received a 50 dollar parking ticket. Shortly after I heard the news that my Mom has been temporarily laid off - 9 weeks. Her entire department now no longer exists, so she's not optimistic that they will hire her back, this just means that they don't have to offer her any severance pay or benefits upon leaving. In the last 6 months, her department went from 25 people to 2, her boss and her. Her boss was also laid off yesterday.
I then paid my 180.00 cable bill from the last two months, my 120.00 phone bill from last month (because I have had so little money recently that my phone was shut off and I had to pay a reactivation fee). I then packed and worked on a CD I had to make for a project that is due tuesday - it took too long to burn, however, so the office was already closed when I went to turn it in and it is now residing with the first person I thought I could pawn it off onto, even though I'm not confident that he will turn it in on time.
Then Doug and I left for Michigan. About 20 minutes down 37, it became apparent that there was something wrong with my transmission. Then the power steering went, and my battery light came on. We stopped to check it out, and in addition to the transmission going, the serpentine belt had snapped and was no more. I managed to get the car to volunteers of america while Sian drove up to Indy, picking up Doug on the way, and picked up a rental car at the airport to drive us up to Michigan because her tires are fucked. Volunteers of America wouldn't let me leave my car there. In fact, they were angry that I was even waiting in their parking lot for my sister to get there so we could make alternate plans. Founded in Christ my ass. I asked if I could leave it there, and their response was "No sir, this is private property we'll have your vehicle towed". "What if I call first thing in the morning?" "We can't let you do that sir, this is private property, if you leave it here we will tow your vehicle." "Well do you have any suggestions of someplace I could take my car." "No. You need to move your vehicle, sir, this is private property." Keep in mind this was all via intercom while I was standing in the freezing rain. And it took me a while before I could even get them to turn on the intercom, instead of trying to talk through the door. And I got news for y'all: saying "sir" makes things infinitely LESS polite. If they had said "I'm sorry, but there's nothing we can do to help you," I would have been more appreciative.
So Sian and Doug got there and I followed them to Aaron's sister's, another 20 miles away, as my headlights slowly dimmed. Thankfully we made it, even though by the time we got there it smelled as if the engine was on fire. Now I find out that they might tow my car ANYWAY, because it doesn't have a plate on it anymore because I needed to bring the plate up to put on my new car. Oh I forgot to mention - the plate transfer cost 150.00. We made it home at about 3:00am, when I had left Bloomington at 5.
So moral of the story? No complaints about your lives to me for at least 2 weeks, I got ya beat.
Much love,
J Cottonmouth
