R.I.P. Wild Bills

The bar that has given me many drunk nights and has hosted infamous "Day before Thanksgiving" parties, has officially closed it's doors. No notice was given to pretty much anybody. It had a waterpipe burst and, I'm going to assume, too much money was required to fix it.

We did a cheers to the memory of Wild Bills and all the good times we've had. We'll miss you Bills.

More News You Don't Care About

Today, more shit on Wall Street. World insurance giant, AIG, was bailed out of financial turmoil by the federal government to save them from bankruptcy. They were given $85 BILLION! I don't know what this will mean in the short run, long run, any run, but I hope it pays off in the end. On paper this sounds very smart, seeing that AIG controls trillions of dollars in insurance and investments and if everyone lost that, then the world would be fucked. So...I hope this shit storm ends soon...because the USA is supposed to be a world money leader, not poor as fuck.

On a related note, what's up with anyone on the news blinking 100 times per minute? I can see the people not wanting to look like they are reading the teleprompter, but what about everyone else? They all do it.

I'm Not a Complete Fuck Up...yet...

So yesterday I was offered the job of franchise consultant for Jimmy Johns. I'm thrilled, but also kinda nervous. I guess that comes with the territory. I'm going from only knowing what it's like to work at a "high school job" or one to get me through college to an actual full-time job with a salary. It's gonna take some long hours with little glamor to be good at my job. I'm prepared for that. I've slacked off for way too long in my life to let this slip. This will be a good wake-up call for me to whip my ass into shape. For the last couple of months I have been a lazy fuck, now its time for me to do something with my life. This should be good.

The one thing I'm really worried about is that I have to move to a different state, most likely Kentucky, at least for the first year. After the first year, I may be moved to Denver. I hope that I'll be able to make some friends down there, or that will be one lonely year. At the same time, I'm excited to move to a different city and experience a whole new way of life...that is, if it's any different than here.

Dave, I'm sorry that I have to leave you (especially with Kiznox moving) but I just can't stay here if I have a chance to do something with my life. I don't expect to stay with this forever, but I gotta do something. Something to kick start my life into gear. Love ya bro, hopefully you don't get too lonely.

Sorry I didn't call most of you to tell you this, but like I said, I live a lazy life. Hopefully this job will change that.

Welcome to the real world, fucker!
Thanks...I guess.

I hope this is just a speed bump in my path to doing what I want and not what I'm told. But for now...I have a job! Also, I now can finally buy a new computer, probably an Apple laptop, because my computer is slowly and painfully dying. I would take her out back and shoot her behind the tool shed, but I still need her until the new baby comes along.

Here I Am in Life...

I just graduated college, with what seems like no knowledge. I don't feel like I have anything to offer the world, which makes getting a job a bitch. Now, I have been offered a corporate job with JJs, which is awesome...but now I don't know if I want to take it. I don't think I really want a job like that. I need a change of pace.

I went home last weekend and talked to Larry. He brought up that he might join the Navy, which is a huge shocker coming from him. But that got me thinking, why don't I join the military? I know someone in the Navy, and he's been to the other side of the world (not to fight, but to train and such) and he says that the experience is amazing. I think that's what I need right now. I think I need to get away from here. Traveling while getting paid and trained just seems right.

After graduating I thought I would have some discipline and direction, but I'm realizing that I really don't. Joining the military (Air Force, Navy, or Army) could provide me with the direction I need, along with helping me advance my skills and possibly learn a new trade along the way. Since I graduated college, I automatically start off at a higher rank/pay grade, so I have that going for me if I join.

Yeah, I do have a fear of joining and then seeing action, but I do believe that this is something that I need. My mom even told me that I should join. There are so many paths that I can choose after my service is complete that this seems like a good choice for me.

I know you guys have mixed thoughts about the military, but right now I'm about 80% sure I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna try to find an Air Force (the branch that most interests me right now) recruitment center and get as much info as possible. Obviously I'll let you guys know what I ultimately decide, but my decision will probably be within the next couple of months.

Yeah, I bet you were not expecting that one.

Gateless Microsoft?

Friday was Bill Gates last day as the top leader at Microsoft. The company he founded. He is leaving to focus on his charitable foundation, which is pretty noble. He is also leaving behind perhaps the creepiest picture of him yet, which can be seen here along with an article.

The future of Microsoft is unknown, but hopefully this will mean that they will try something different and try to show up Apple. That'd be nice.

Election Brief of the Moment...

Courtesy The Stranger

Warning: Messy math ahead.

I think the pundits skipped lightly over Wyoming and Mississippi mainly because those states were/are unlikely to change the status quo: ie, Obama leading Clinton by well over 100 pledged delegates. Pennsylvania is her next best chance to catch up. Not that she will.

What I find curious is why people aren’t marveling over how accurate the Obama camp’s early February projections have been. That document probably wasn’t leaked in order to manage expectations, people said then—why, it has him winning every February post-Super Tuesday contest save Maine. (He ended up winning those caucuses too.) But if people had taken those projections seriously, they wouldn’t have been surprised that he lost Ohio resoundingly and Texas by a hair. The projections didn’t seem to take the Texas two-step caucus advantage into account, but the primary vote margin was spot on: O 47, C 51.

A Daily Kos diarist has broken down the Obama campaign’s projected and actual delegate counts for the contests up to Wyoming:
Louisiana Projected: 31 / Actual: 34 / Difference: +3
Nebraska Projected: 15 / Actual: 16 / Difference: +1
Virgin Islands Projected: 2 / Actual: 3 / Difference: +1
Washington Projected: 49 / Actual: 52 / Difference: +3
Maine Projected: 10 / Actual: 15 / Difference: +5
Dems Abroad Projected: 5 / Actual: 6 / Difference: +1
D.C Projected: 9 / Actual: 12 / Difference: +3
Maryland Projected: 37 / Actual: 42 / Difference: +5
Virginia Projected: 43 / Actual: 54 / Difference: +11
Hawaii Projected: 11 / Actual: 14 / Difference: +3
Wisconsin Projected: 40 / Actual: 42 / Difference: +2
Ohio Projected: 68 / Actual: 66 / Difference: -2
Rhode Island Projected: 8 / Actual: 8 / Difference: 0
Texas Projected: 92 / Actual: 98 / Difference: +6
Vermont Projected: 9 / Actual: 9 / Difference: 0

Wyoming was projected at 7 delegates, and the actual count is 7. Pretty creepy.

So what’s Obama going to lose in the coming weeks?

According to the memo, we can look forward to Clinton wins in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Puerto Rico—a conservative but reasonable assessment. Accordingly, from tomorrow through June 7, we can expect Obama to win approximately 303 additional pledged delegates. Clinton should win approximately 296. Which changes absolutely nothing.

It’s about the superdelegates, stupid. The media ought to be very, very careful about which Clinton narratives they repeat (big states! Obama has to prove himself in Pennsylvania! pledged delegates can actually change their votes!) and which Obama narratives they mimic (more pledged delegates! more states! popular vote!).

Let’s say the projections hold—and Michigan and Florida are not seated. Obama will have 1,379+303 pledged delegates at the convention, for a total of 1,682. Clinton will have 1,526. You need 2,025 to get the nomination, so Obama will need 343 superdelegates, and Clinton will need 499. (Currently they have 210 and 245, respectively, so Obama needs 133 more and Clinton needs 254 more.) There are 795 superdelegates total, so let’s see… Obama needs 39% of the remaining superdelegates and Clinton needs 75% of the remaining superdelegates to clinch the nomination.

No wonder Clinton’s fighting so scrappy for Florida and Michigan.

Also...

COLUMBUS, Miss — Sen. Barack Obama delivered an animated rebuke today of suggestions from the Clintons in recent days that he could run as her vice president.

“Now first of all with all due respect, with all due respect,” he said here during a town hall meeting. “I won twice as many states as Sen. Clinton. I won more of the popular vote than Sen. Clinton. I have more delegates than Sen. Clinton. So I don’t’ know how someone in second place can offer the vice presidency to someone in first place. If I was in second place I could understand but I am in first place right now.

He referenced comments from Bill Clinton in 1992 that his “most important criteria” for vice president was that person must be ready to be commander in chief.

“They have been spending the last two or three weeks” arguing that he is not ready to be commander in chief, Obama said.

“I don’t understand. If I am not ready, why do you think I would be such a great vice president?” Obama asked the crowd, which gave him a standing ovation during his defense. “I don’t understand.”

“You can’t say he is not ready on day one, then you want him to be your vice president,” Obama continued. “I just want everybody to absolutely clear: I am not running for vice president. I am running to be president of the United States of America.”

Please, for the love of our future children, care about this election enough to be informed voters.

State Shutdown Narrowly Missed. Say Hello to Rape-You-In-the-Ass Taxes...

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- The state Legislature agreed early Monday to raise the income tax and expand the sales tax to services in a historic deal with the governor that quickly ended a partial state government shutdown.

For just over four hours early Monday, fewer state police were on Michigan highways, campgrounds were closed, road construction projects and lottery sales were stopped, and more service interruptions were on the horizon for later in the day until the final pieces were sent to Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

Applause broke out in Granholm's office at the Capitol as soon as the final vote was announced at 4:18 a.m. The deal prompted Granholm to call off the partial shutdown of government that began at 12:01 a.m.

"This budget agreement is the right solution for Michigan," Granholm said in a statement. "We prevented massive cuts to public education, health care and public safety while also making extensive government reforms and passing new revenue. With the state back on solid financial footing, we can turn our focus to the critical task of jump-starting our economy and creating new jobs."

Granholm signed a 30-day extension of Michigan's budget that technically expired at midnight. The continuation budget keeps government running.

The Legislature agreed to raise Michigan's income tax rate from 3.9 percent to 4.35 percent and expand the 6 percent sales tax to some services. Granholm signed both measures.

Structural changes to state government -- including the management of teacher and other public employee benefits -- also are part of the package.

The tax increases should erase most of a projected $1.75 billion deficit in Michigan's next budget. The final budget for the new fiscal year will include $440 million in spending cuts, including no inflationary funding increase for public universities and community colleges, Granholm said.

The Republican-led Senate finished passing the package at the end of a draining, marathon session that covered parts of three days. Members of the Democratic-controlled House stopped voting and left the chamber before 4 a.m. since the only key vote related to the deal remained in the Senate.

"Nobody wanted a shutdown. I think that is true across the board," said Liz Boyd, a spokeswoman for Granholm.

Michigan already has the nation's highest unemployment rate -- 7.4 percent in August -- and just went through a two-day strike involving the United Auto Workers and General Motors Corp. Disrupting services from state parks to road construction risked further upsetting an already unsettled public.

But Boyd said the months-long debate over Michigan's new budget is about defining the state's future and making sure enough money was available to support education, public safety and health care.

Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, R-Rochester, said he was disappointed that taxes are going up but added that Republicans successfully pushed for spending cuts and government restructuring changes.

"It's been a long, long couple of days," he said. "We're coming out of this having been through a lot and I think we're better for it."

Without a budget deal in place, 35,000 of the state's roughly 53,000 workers would have been barred from going to work Monday morning and all state services except those needed to protect health and safety would've halted.

Employee paychecks would have been reduced to reflect any hours missed because of a shutdown, but Granholm asked them all to report to work as usual Monday. The state last withheld some employee paychecks in 1959, when a cash-starved state budget resulted in what became known as the Payless Payday crisis.

"It's always tough in a recession to look at doing a revenue increase," said House Speaker Andy Dillon, D-Redford. "But I think it was clearly unavoidable. We also need reforms, and we are getting substantial reforms as part of this agreement."

Some of the toughest votes were for tax increases, especially in the Republican-led Senate.

The Senate split 19-19 twice, forcing Lt. Gov. John Cherry to cast the tie-breaking vote in favor of the income tax bill and expanded sales tax to cover some services.

Four Republican senators voted for the higher income tax -- Patricia Birkholz of Saugatuck, Tom George of Portage, Ron Jelinek of Three Oaks and Gerald Van Woerkom of Norton Shores. Democrats Glenn Anderson of Westland and Dennis Olshove of Warren voted against the income tax increase.

Three Republicans senators -- Jelinek, Valde Garcia of Howell and Wayne Kuipers of Holland -- voted to expand the sales tax to services. Anderson was the lone Democrat opposing the sales tax expansion.

The House passed the income tax measure 57-52. Democrats hold a 58-52 edge in the House, but three Democrats -- Martin Griffin and Michael Simpson of the Jackson area and Lisa Wojno of Warren -- voted against it. Two Republicans, Chris Ward of Brighton and Ed Gaffney of Grosse Pointe Farms, voted in favor of the proposal.

No House Republicans voted for the bill placing the 6 percent sales tax on services -- a proposal stiffly opposed by the business community. All Democrats did, except for Reps. Marc Corriveau of Northville and Kate Ebli of Monroe, who voted no.

The sales tax would not apply to tickets to sporting and entertainment events or accounting services. But businesses and consumers would pay the tax on ski tickets, administrative and investment services, consultants, warehousing and storage, interior design, commercial landscaping and janitorial services, among other services.

Raising the state's income tax to 4.35 percent will raise an additional $765 million for the state. The income tax bill is written so the rate will gradually drop back to 3.9 percent between 2011 and 2015.

Extending the sales tax to some services starting Dec. 1 will bring in an estimated $614 million for the 10 months remaining in the fiscal year at that point, or about $750 million annually, state Treasurer Robert Kleine said.

Rep. Craig DeRoche of Novi, the top Republican in the House, said he didn't want a government shutdown or higher taxes.

"I think it sets back Michigan's economy," he said.

The House and Senate also approved a controversial measure that would change the way some teacher and state worker health benefits are determined -- a tough vote for many Democrats and some Republicans because it will affect an insurance affiliate of the Michigan Education Association, the state's largest teachers' union.

Political posturing over votes, with an eye toward the 2008 and 2010 elections, slowed down the process of getting a deal in place. Some vulnerable Democrats had resisted voting for a tax increase, while some Republicans worried they could face recalls if they supported a tax increase.

Gov. Shutdown Possible...

LANSING, Mich. (AP) -- Lawmakers trying to avoid a partial government shutdown were taking a short break early Sunday from brokering deals on tax increases and other measures aimed at plugging a budget deficit.

The Legislature is tasked with erasing a $1.75 billion deficit in the fiscal year that begins Monday.

Some cost-cutting moves and government restructuring proposals had started to advance through the Legislature and could be wrapped up later Sunday.

One proposal approved 21-17 by the Republican-led Senate would aim to save money by changing how health insurance benefits for teachers and government workers are managed.

The measure, now headed to the Democrat-led House, is key to the overall budget deal because it could be a trade-off to get Republicans to vote for tax increases.

The House passed bills to create incentives for Medicaid recipients to lead healthy lifestyles, among other reforms, which now are headed to the Senate.

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm has told about 35,000 of the state's more than 53,000 workers not to report to work on Monday if a shutdown occurs. The remaining workers, mostly related to public health and safety, would stay on the job.

A partial state shutdown would mean most government operations would cease, including liquor deliveries, lottery ticket sales, the issuance of driver's licenses and construction on state roads.

Republicans have pushed Granholm to accept a temporary budget that would extend the one currently in place, giving legislators more time to craft a long term deal.

Granholm has said she won't sign a temporary budget unless she has assurances higher taxes to pay for education, public health and other programs are part of the deal.

Leaders in both the Democrat-led House and Republican-controlled Senate are optimistic a deal will be reached to avoid a shutdown.

Lowered Drinking Age...Again?

So apparently someone wants the drinking age to be, once again, lowered to 18 years old. While this may be good for those who are under 21, I say fuck that! They can wait the extra 3 years like everyone else. Most bars are crowded enough, we don't need those under aged fuckers taking up valuable bar space. Especially the 18 year olds, they sure are cocky bastards. They already suck at driving, don't give them another way to crash their cars or take up space in the bars. Fuck them.

Won't Somebody Please Think of the Children!!!

Clearly, the Chinese are systematically trying to take out our children. Is it possible that they are just trying to thin out our numbers in preperation for their pending invasion?

Via MSNBC:

"Mattel recalled 9 million Chinese-made toys Tuesday, including Polly Pocket play sets and Batman action figures, because of dangers to children from lead paint or tiny magnets that could be swallowed."

What a staggering number. 9 Fucking Million. Wow.

Polly Pocket dolls

"Lead is toxic if ingested by young children, and under current regulations, children's products found to have more than .06 percent lead accessible to users are subject to a recall."

Luckily, no children have been reported harmed (yet) from this recall. It seems that Mattel is doing some preemptive damage control and trying to get everything out of childrens hands before they start licking the tainted paint off of toys. However, the conspiracy theorist in me has to begin to wonder if this was intentional. I mean, how do you go about fucking that up so badly when you have been producing toys without lead paint for so long? Then my mind starts to wander and I think to myself, "When is the Sea of Red coming?"

"...in the previous recall of Polly Pocket play sets Nov. 21, 2006, three children had been injured by swallowing more than one magnet. All three suffered intestinal perforations that required surgery. When more than one magnet is swallowed, they can attach to each other and cause intestinal perforation, infection or blockage, which can be fatal."

Think that I might be wrong about the impending Chinese Tsunami? They have already begun to kill our children. Although, the magnet thing really just screams Darwin. These kids that swallow magnets or, well, anything are just a slight level above mentally retarded. Still, you have to wonder...

And then you have Jack McClellan:

Thankfully, he has finally been arrested. I am seriously hoping that the prosecution can make this charge stick and he spends a few days behind bars. I truly believe that the "Eye for an Eye" justice system that is upheld in the slammer will see him raped, tortured, and murdered.

Via MSNBC:

"Jack McClellan, 45, who is unemployed and lives out of his car, was arrested at 1:40 p.m. at the University of California, Los Angeles, campus police said in a statement. He was arrested near the university's Infant Development Program, which provides onsite care for children 3 months to 3 years old and serves faculty, students and staff, according to the university's Web site."

"For years, McClellan maintained a Web site in Washington where he posted photos of children he had taken in public places. He also discussed how he liked to stake out parks, public libraries, fast-food restaurants and other areas where little girls, or "LGs," congregate."

So yeah, this guy could totally die and I would not feel bad at all. Why don't the Chinese come after him?

2 Michigan Football Players Facing Charges...

Here's the story, in full (so I can enjoy it even more), as reported by WDIV.

"Two Michigan Wolverines are expected to go on trial next month on separate charges of indecent exposure and driving while intoxicated, Local 4 reported.

Wide receiver LaTerryal Savoy, 21, of Louisiana, pleaded not guilty to charges that he exposed himself July 23 to a 21-year-old woman he knew inside Michigan Stadium. He is charged with one count of indecent exposure. The misdemeanor carries up to one year in jail and a fine. His trial is set for Sept. 21.

Linebacker Obi Ezeh, 19, of Grand Rapids, pleaded not guilty to operating a vehicle while intoxicated, also a misdemeanor. Ezeh was arrested May 22 after his vehicle struck a utility pole. His trial is set for Sept. 19."

Suck it, UM football. Suck it, HARD.
