Panic, The Bird Flu is Coming...

Fantastic look at what the impending bird flu pandemic can be found at, of course, The Stranger. "Be Afraid", written by Erica C. Barnett.

A little taste:
"In one of WHO's (World Health Organization) "more conservative scenarios," according to its strategic action plan for pandemic flu, there will be as many as 233 million outpatient visits, 5.2 million hospital admissions, and 7.4 million deaths worldwide."

Already Spreading: This map gives you a pretty good idea of the areas that H5N1 has been spread to.

You would probably be correct in assuming that this will not be a huge issue this year. Hell, it may not be an issue for years. Still, look at the affected areas, read the article to get a better idea as to how this could affect you, read the Wikipedia portion on H5N1. There is no vaccine for this flu. There has yet to be an outbreak, and it could take months before a vaccine could even be made. That is not taking into account how much time it could take to distribute.

This is what the bird flu looks like:

Isn't it amazing how something so small could do so much damage?
