Movie Review: Superbad

Now that I have seen Superbad twice, I believe I can write a proper review for the film. Written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, friends since they were kids, and loosely chronicles their lives. Also produced by the guy who did Knocked Up and co-starring Rogen, this should be an indicator that the movie will be hilarious. Oh and it was. One of the best comedies I've seen in the past couple of years, and that's saying a lot.

I love those R rated comedies. They run rampant with the profanity and cock jokes and I loved it. The whole scene where Seth (Jonah Hill) is talking about his "problem" he had when he was younger and why he hates Becca (Martha MacIsaac) comes out of left field and is incredibly hilarious. That scene also comes back in the credits where they show all the drawings for a good couple of minutes. This would not have been possible in anything less than a R rated movie.

The movie opens with a sweet nod to 70s films with bright colors and the main characters dancing through painted shadows of their bodies to sweet music. Then you see Seth driving to Evan's (Michael Cera) house and calling him on the way to share the his thought of what porn site he's going to subscribe to next year...and the hilarity starts early.

The main plot of the film is the boys trying to win the affection of the girls they have crushes on by using Fogell's (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) fake ID with the sole name of McLovin to buy them alcohol. They plan on getting them drunk so they would sleep with the boys so they won't graduate as virgins. As all movies like these go, things don't go as planned and they set off on an unexpected adventure of nervous hilarity.

All of the cast plays their parts perfectly. Seth probably has the funniest lines in the film, as he is the raunchiest of the characters. Just think "the funny thing about my back, is it's located on my cock." Evan actually pissed me off most of the time (don't get me wrong, he was funny) because he was such a bitch. I know that was his character, but fucking Christ he didn't have to be such a bitch. Fogell aka McLovin was extremely nervous throughout the beginning but quickly grew up and became very likable. The 2 cops ran away with their scenes and I loved it. When they yell a line like "Oh shit, it's the cops!" after they hear sirens, that's just pure gold. The girls in the film didn't really bring much to the table, but they were good to look at. I guess that's all you really need, right?

If you really want to see this movie, which I highly recommend, you should either see it in an empty theater or at least twice so you can catch all the subtle dialog that you'd miss while you or others around you are laughing too loud. The soundtrack is also very good, ranging from Ted Nugent's "Strangle Hold" (one of my favorite songs) to some rap song that fits in perfectly when they enter the film's final party. Superbad never lets up when it comes to hilarity. When you think they are slowing down, they hit you in the face with something completely unexpected and absolutely hysterical. I believe that everyone should see this at least once in their lives and for that I give this film a 9 out of 10.
