Voltron and Hollywood...

Set to be made into a movie. According to tmz, "New Regency is working with the Mark Gordon Co. to turn "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" into a live-action film."

Sounds exciting. I would definitely be at the theatres for that one. If it is anything near as spectacular as the Transformers movie was, then this could be a huge hit. Hell, how could it not? It's Freaking Voltron!

There is a ton of rage flying throughout the internet about Hollywood not having any origional ideas for movies, but I find myself in the opposite camp. Yeah, it would be nice to see something new, something fresh, something come out of the blockbuster machine over on sunset boulevard, but I also believe that is not what Hollywood is meant for at this point. Truthfully, I still see interesting things coming out of the Independent market. Hell, there are a vast number of stars who realized that they could make the big bucks staring in ridiculously cheesy movies for a while so that they could invest themselves in other, more complex work. Also, it cannot be overlooked that some of the biggest stars have started at the low end of the spectrum. Matt Damon is the biggest money-maker in Hollywood. Anybody remember "Good Will Hunting"? And does anyone really think that the general American populace wants anything other than what has been flooding theatres lately? It seems that there are a lot of people who refuse to accept that the marketplace is, in fact, dictating the kinds of movies being made. If Transformers was a flop, do you really think that anyone would be talking about a Voltron movie? What would have happened if Spider-man did not produce huge numbers? Think that there would have been, so far, two sequels? Some people believe that Hollywood is jamming these movies down our throats with a handful of popcorn, but I accept that we just do not want that salty, buttery taste off of our tongues. I for one, cannot wait for the next bite.

It all goes into escapism. We, the American people, are at war. With everything. At all times. Always. We have always been at war with Eastasia. We are involved in the losing War in Iraq, the War in Afghanistan, the War on Drugs, the War on Terror, the impending War in Iran, and probable War on Anything That Could Impede The Career of Someone in Power. These issues are all so damn complex and stressful that it would seem impossible not to have these fantastical adventures with a clearly stated hero and an obvious bad guy. It is nearly so cheesy as to have that guy with the moustache that curls at each end so that everyone knows how evil he is. Yes, we need these movies to get away from the wretchedness of the real world. America, we need heroes right now. Whether they swing through the air on webbing shot out of their palms in a ridiculous red and blue costume or transform into a fantastical living robot from space, we need the escape.

I can only attempt to make that point. I think Aunt May says it best in the first Spider-man movie. I cannot remember or find the speech anywhere on the net right now, but it is the scene where Peter comes to visit and she is packing boxes on the driveway with the neighbor-boy. It is one of those magic moments that just really hits deep with me. It makes me believe in people, and I think that is something we all need a little bit more of.

What do you guys think? Anybody getting tired of the remakes and re-visits of classic childhood memories? Do you still believe in the Hollywood magic?

Just curious.

Voltron is going to be fantastic.
